DESCRIPTION:This pop-up exhibition explains how the ‘Fab Four’ unexpectedly ended up in Goole one cold February night in 1963.  \nIt tells the story of The Beatles’  journey back to Liverpool from a show in Hull\, which could have had disastrous consequences\, both for the band and the history of popular music.  \nThe display features a number of artefacts from the personal collection of Goole Museum Custodian and life-long Beatles fan Richard Young.

SUMMARY:Reuben Chappell: Master Of The Masts
DESCRIPTION:This landmark exhibition celebrates the life and work of Reuben Chappell (1870-1940)\, a Goole-born artist internationally who is recognised as one of the finest ship portraitists of the pierhead painting tradition. \nFeaturing over 40 of his works\, many of which have never been on public display\, the exhibition explores the fascinating features of Chappell’s compositions and how he captured some of the greatest shifts in maritime technology\, including the transition from wood to steel and the replacement of sail by steam. \nThe dramatic and often tragic stories behind the vessels and their crews are also told. The exhibition also tells the story of Chappell’s journey as an artist and devoted family man\, from his humble childhood origins around Goole’s bustling docks to his relocation to the wild and rugged coast of Cornwall\, where his work continued through war and personal struggles.

SUMMARY:Goole In Focus
DESCRIPTION:To round off Goole Museum’s series of exhibitions celebrating the town’s bicentenary year\, celebrated local photographer Syd Young is exhibiting Goole in Focus\, a series of images captured at this memorable point in the town’s history\, at Goole Museum. \nAt the end of 2023\, East Riding Museums commissioned Syd to take 200 contemporary photographs capturing the unique culture\, sense of place and spirit of Goole and its people\, as they celebrate the town’s bicentenary milestone.  \nTaken over a three-year period\, the photographs capture different aspects of Goole in varying light and weather conditions. Many of the images will be instantly recognisable\, others reveal some of the town’s fine detail\, including elements of the past that might easily escape the eye. The people of Goole also feature\, as they take part in everyday activities\, sports and events\, including those that have formed part of the bicentenary celebrations.  \nSyd was keen to create maximum impact so the exhibition will comprise of projected images in the gallery accompanied by a soundscape\, offering an immersive experience for the visitor. Created by Syd\, Ebb and Flow is an aural depiction of the swirling tides and eddies of the river Ouse\, which brought prosperity to the new town 200 years ago. The soundtrack features everyday sounds of the town recorded over the last few months.  \nSyd explained: “This is the most ambitious project I’ve worked on. To capture the port and town in the here and now\, and present it to the very people who see it every day has been quite a challenge. The complete audio visual display is a first for the gallery and will give plenty of impact to the photographs. I’m very excited to see the reaction of our visitors when they experience it.” \nMembers of the public are invited to attend an opening event\, which will take place on Saturday\, 31 October\, from 10am to 12pm\, but the exhibition will remain on display until the end of the year. \nFor more information about Goole Museum and to views its opening times\, click here.
