Reuben Chappell: Master Of The Masts

July 17 - October 25

This landmark exhibition celebrates the life and work of Reuben Chappell (1870-1940), a Goole-born artist internationally recognised as one of the finest ship portraitists of the pierhead painting tradition. Featuring over 40 of his works, many of which have never been on public display, the exhibition explores the fascinating features of Chappell’s compositions and how he captured some of the greatest shifts in maritime technology, including the transition from wood to steel and the replacement of sail by steam. The dramatic and often tragic stories behind the vessels and their crews are also told. The exhibition also tells the story of Chappell’s journey as an artist and devoted family man, from his humble childhood origins around Goole’s bustling docks to his relocation to the wild and rugged coast of Cornwall, where his work continued through war and personal struggles.
